Barn Observatory

Barn Observatory, 2012

24' x 8.5' x 8.5'.  Rough-cut pine lumber, fabricated steel, hay and mud, ac motors, denatured alcohol, plexiglass, and light.

Barn Observatory was made during an internship at Franconia Sculpture Park in Shafer, Mn. The interior looks and smells of a barn stall. The outside of the work represents a watch tower or observatory, with ladder access to a deck on top of the structure. Upon entering and inspecting the stall a motion sensor triggers a steel box above the viewer, causing a liquid inside to vibrate and project light onto the space below. This action is at once alarming and humbling, causing the viewer to look up at this other-worldly event.
